Introduction:
Why do many people come to church?
- An enforced obligation
- A necessary part of tradition
- A commit to ensure righteousness
before God and community
Why do Christians come to church?
- To worship
- To learn what Jesus taught
- To fellowship
- To break
bread
- To pray
What does worship look like?
- It depends on the setting
- All worship includes two aspects
- Love for God
- Love for those God gave His life for
Transition:
- We will focus on the worship aspect of the
reason we come to church
- Worship is a time when the church gathers
to –
- Declare God’s glory
- Pray to the only wise God
- Read His revelation to us
- Teach and learn how to apply this word
Text: We
will move between Acts 2 and Psalm 100
- Acts 2:46 – "Every day they
continued to meet together in the temple courts…"
- Worship is an activity
- We are called to this in a public
gathering (this is the Greek word we translate
"church")
- Hebrews 10:25 – "Let us not
give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let
us encourage one another – and all the more as you see the Day
approaching"
- The word is one of exhortation for
the body to be together
- There is a recognition that some
have separated from the body (the Lone Ranger
Christian)
- The reason for meeting is to encourage
one another in the preparation for the Lord’s return
- What does worship look like?
- Psalm 100 – "Shout for joy to the
Lord, all the earth. Worship the Lord with gladness; come before Him
with joyful songs…"
- Worship is an activity of joy
- Worship is an activity of gladness
- Worship is an activity of celebration
- Worship is an activity of recognition
- Service is
a part of worship
- The word from the Greek implies an
activity directed towards God that derives a benefit or reward
from God
- Within the context of the Christian
church, worship is not complete unless it is not service oriented
to people
- Deuteronomy 6:4-6 and Matthew 22:37-39
- 1 John (the theme of the letter)
- James 1:27
Conclusion:
- Worship is an
act of love
- Worship is evident
- In the context of the gathering of
God’s people
- In the context of our devotion to
God
- In the context of our service to
God and those whom we’ve been called
to minister
- Worship leads us to closer fellowship
with God
Worship empowers us to greater acts
of love
