Introduction:
  1. Why do many people come to church?
    1. An enforced obligation
    2. A necessary part of tradition
    3. A commit to ensure righteousness before God and community
  2. Why do Christians come to church?
    1. To worship
    2. To learn what Jesus taught
    3. To fellowship
    4. To break bread
    5. To pray
  3. What does worship look like?
    1. It depends on the setting
    2. All worship includes two aspects
      1. Love for God
      2. Love for those God gave His life for

Transition:

  1. We will focus on the worship aspect of the reason we come to church
  2. Worship is a time when the church gathers to –
    1. Declare God’s glory
    2. Pray to the only wise God
    3. Read His revelation to us
    4. Teach and learn how to apply this word

Text: We will move between Acts 2 and Psalm 100

  1. Acts 2:46 – "Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts…"
    1. Worship is an activity
    2. We are called to this in a public gathering (this is the Greek word we translate "church")
    3. Hebrews 10:25 – "Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another – and all the more as you see the Day approaching"
      1. The word is one of exhortation for the body to be together
      2. There is a recognition that some have separated from the body (the Lone Ranger Christian)
      3. The reason for meeting is to encourage one another in the preparation for the Lord’s return
    4. What does worship look like?
  2. Psalm 100 – "Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth. Worship the Lord with gladness; come before Him with joyful songs…"
    1. Worship is an activity of joy
    2. Worship is an activity of gladness
    3. Worship is an activity of celebration
    4. Worship is an activity of recognition
  3. Service is a part of worship
    1. The word from the Greek implies an activity directed towards God that derives a benefit or reward from God
    2. Within the context of the Christian church, worship is not complete unless it is not service oriented to people
    3. Deuteronomy 6:4-6 and Matthew 22:37-39
    4. 1 John (the theme of the letter)
    5. James 1:27

Conclusion:

  1. Worship is an act of love
  2. Worship is evident
    1. In the context of the gathering of God’s people
    2. In the context of our devotion to God
    3. In the context of our service to God and those whom we’ve been called to minister
  3. Worship leads us to closer fellowship with God

Worship empowers us to greater acts of love
